Sculptor: Hannah Honeywill
About the sculpture and photograph:
The sculpture in this photograph is a reshaped MDF skirting board that has been gilded using traditional water gilding techniques, i.e. applying gesso, bole and gold leaf. The artist made this piece after researching the question: Is a queer identity visible? and exploring colloquial terms used to describe queer attributes such as a gay man having a voice with a ‘flamboyant inflection’ – the original title of the sculpture.
This piece aims to reclaim this term and act as a celebration of queer fabulousness. In this photograph, the sculptural form is emerging from a fire escape at the back of a mill complex – a largely unknown, unused and semi-hidden space. The form declares itself, becoming a wider celebration of the extraordinary, both existing within and breaking away from the ordinary.
