Symphonic Rain

Sculptor: Jim Bond

About the sculpture and photograph:

At the heart of this intriguing image lies ‘Symphonic Rain,’ a fascinating kinetic water sound sculpture powered by solar and wind energy. The sculpture features a grand steel funnel that collects rain, storing it in a central recycled tank. Every fifteen minutes, the water gracefully flows through programmed solenoids, filling twelve meticulously balanced cups. As the cups tip, their arms strike a symphony of cymbals, harmonizing rhythmic sounds with the captured raindrops.

‘Symphonic Rain’ stands tall, reaching heights of up to three meters, exuding an imposing presence that demands attention. To enhance its impact in the image, skilled lighting techniques and deliberate camera angles were employed, accentuating the sculpture’s grandeur and allure. The photograph was taken at the mill complex, where the piece was skilfully constructed. This setting provides a backdrop of neglect, with foliage gracefully growing on the inside of the walls, adding an air of mystery to the image, and evoking a sense of both abandonment and discovery.
