Drawn Into The Distance

Sculptor: Helaina Sharpley

About the sculpture and photograph:

Inspired by the far-reaching views of the artist’s home county, Yorkshire, ‘Drawn into the distance’ depicts a reimagined rural landscape. Using iron wire, Artist Helaina Sharpley has hand-manipulated the material to create a complex and layered suspended installation.

Helaina required a photograph of the entire sculpture. Space was very limited with only a small amount of room between the camera, lights and sculpture itself (the sculpture was created and assembled in a changing room at the back of an empty clothes shop!). In addition to the limited space, it was necessary to ensure that all of the sculpture was in focus. The sculpture is approximately 5 feet wide and 5 feet deep. This was achieved with careful depth-of-field camera control to ensure the entire sculpture remained in focus. I also created some close-up images to show the detail and intricacy of Helaina’s work.
