About the sculpture and photograph:
“Vera Hot Rivets” is a captivating photograph capturing the essence of the sculpture ‘Vera,’ serving as both a celebration and a memorial to the rich history of Beverley shipyard and its countless ships. The focal point of this artwork is the steam trawler ‘Vera,’ constructed in 1907 at the shipyard but tragically wrecked near Iceland in 1925.
Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, the sculpture artfully portrays ‘Vera’ through iron rivets suspended on fishing wire, forming a shimmering shoal that elegantly takes her shape. The use of rivets reminiscent of traditional shipbuilding methods adds an authentic touch, reinforcing the artwork’s deep maritime connection.
To heighten the emotional impact, the sculpture is bathed in a blend of natural and vibrant red artificial light, creating a compelling sensation of “hot rivets.” This interplay of light enhances the sculpture’s atmosphere, drawing viewers into its historical significance and the profound story it represents.
