Sculptor: Jim Bond
About the sculpture and photograph:
The photograph showcases a sculpture that pays homage to Brian Robinson, the first British cyclist to triumph in a stage of the Tour de France, hailing from Ravensthorpe and currently residing in Mirfield. As a tribute to his remarkable feats on two wheels, sculptor Jim Bond created ‘Vitesse,’ a deconstructed sculptural installation using Brian’s stage-winning bicycle as a symbol of the race’s challenges and the toll it took on him.
The Tour de France demands explosive energy and a relentless physical commitment, pushing riders to the limits of human endurance over gruelling weeks. ‘Vitesse’ serves as a facsimile of Brian’s Raphael Geminiani road bike, seemingly exploding apart under the strain and power of expended energy, frozen in time and space.
